Isn’t it simple to light a candle? Simply touch the wick to a flame and you’re done! However, if your candle is in a jar, it may become difficult after the candle has burned down a little, especially if your hand does not fit in the jar’s mouth. Furthermore, if the candle does not burn evenly, melted wax may eventually cover the wick, making it nearly impossible to light. Fortunately, you can keep your candle game going with a couple of quick tricks.
1.Turn the candle upside down to make it easier to light a candle:
If you don’t have a long lighter or match, and your candle has burned down too much to light normally, try turning it upside-down. Light your lighter or match, then place it directly beneath the candle wick. The flame should naturally reach up toward the wick, making lighting much easier.
As soon as the wick lights, turn the candle right-side-up to avoid spilling any wax as it melts.
This may be enough to light the candle on its own, but you can combine it with any of the following techniques for even greater reach.
2. For easy reach, use a fireplace match to light a candle:
Matches for fireplaces are about 12 in (30 cm) long and make it easy to light almost any jar candle. A bbq lighter, for example, has a long, sometimes flexible nozzle at the end, so all you have to do to light it is place the tip near the wick and press the trigger.
If you have a taper candle on hand, you could light it first, then reach down into the jar with the lit candle.
3. To lengthen a match, use your middle and ring fingers:
If you only have a regular match, you may only need to change the way you hold it to light your candle. Strike the match, then quickly tuck the match’s end between your middle and ring fingers. Once you’re certain it’s secure, place your hand flat against the jar’s mouth and stretch your fingers into the jar’s mouth until the match reaches the candle wick.
This can be made easier by turning the candle sideways.
If you hold the match upside down, the flame will lick upward and burn you.
4. If you still can’t reach the wick, try using uncooked spaghetti:
The most unexpected solution to your problem could be right in your pantry! Light one end of a single piece of uncooked spaghetti. The spaghetti should burn in the same way that a match does. It won’t last long, but the flame should last long enough for you to reach down into the jar and light your candle.
Shake the flame out or dip the end in a little water to extinguish the spaghetti.
Similarly, lighting the end of a wooden chopstick may work.
5. To extend the reach of a standard lighter, use your index finger:
Don’t give up hope just because you only have a standard lighter. With your thumb and middle finger, grab the lighter near the bottom. Strike the flint with your index finger, then quickly depress the lever to keep the flame going.
You’ll be able to reach the lighter further down toward the wick because you’ll be holding it near the bottom. You’ll also be able to get your fingers deeper into the jar because you won’t have to ball up your fist.
6. Twist a piece of paper tightly so that it slowly burns:
If you’re in a hurry and need something to reach deep into a tall candle, try using a scrap of notebook or computer paper. Twist the ends of the paper in opposite directions while holding it longways until the paper is rolled as tightly as it will go. Then, light one end of the paper while holding the other. Light your candle quickly, then place it in a bowl of water or hold it under a running sink to extinguish it.
Shake the paper to extinguish it, as this could send hot embers flying.
Work quickly because the paper will most likely burn quickly. Also, make certain that you are set up to put out the flame before you ever light the paper.
